Hamilton teen who jumped overpass railing ‘not of sound mind,’ says SIU

The province’s police watchdog terminated its investigation into a Hamilton officer after a local teen jumped over an Ancaster overpass railing after a police interaction in July.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) report detailed the incident in which a 17-year-old male was walking shoeless in the middle of Golf Links Rd. over Highway 403.
“The teenager was not of sound mind at the time,” reads the report.
He was spotted by a patrolling police officer who flashed his high beams at the teen, who reacted by moving onto the sidewalk.
According to the report, the officer drove beside the teen and asked him if he was okay.

The teen said yes and then jumped, falling onto a “grassy area west of the highway,” fracturing his left leg and suffering a collapsed lung.
SIU director Joseph Martino closed the file after determining that “the teenager was the sole author of his misadventure that night.”
The SIU is an independent government agency investigating the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators, who are civilians.
