What’s Closed for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Day in Clarington, Pickering and Durham

What's closed and open Easter Weekend in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Welland

September 30 marks the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada to honour the children taken, families left behind and survivors of Canada’s residential school system. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of colonialism and residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

There will be flag-raining ceremonies, various proclamations and ribbon-tying and the wearing of orange shirts is encouraged. Most municipal facilities will remain open, however, with the notable exceptions of facilities and many services in Pickering, Clarington and the Region of Durham.

Here’s what’s closed in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge on Friday.

Closed:

All Clarington facilities, including Town Hall and all recreational facilities
Pickering City Hall and most recreational facilities, including Chestnut Hills Development Recreation Complex, Dunbarton Pool, Don Beer Arena, East Shore Community Centre, George Ashe Community Centre, Pickering Museum Village, all Pickering Public Libraries and the Pickering Animal Shelter.
All services at the Region of Durham’s headquarters in Whitby, including Provincial Courts, Ontario Works and Children’s Services Fee Subsidy Program.
All waste management facilities: Oshawa, Scugog, Brock and the Clarington Household Special Waste Depot, as well as the Waste Management Centre in Whitby and the Waste Management Call Centre (calls and emails to be returned on October 3)
Ontario Works offices in Ajax, Uxbridge and Oshawa (both locations)
Health Department programs and services, including services at Consumers Road in Whitby and Perry Street in Port Perry; the Oral Health Clinic in Oshawa; sexual health clinics at the Oshawa Centre and Pickering Town Centre; the breastfeeding Clinic at the Whitby Mall and the Community Immunization Clinic in Bowmanville.

Ontario Works monthly cheque pick up will be on Thursday, September 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Clients with direct deposit will receive their payment on Thursday, September 29 as well. For more details, visit http://bit.ly/3qT39on.

The Port Perry Adult Day Program (451 Paxton Street) will remain closed on Fridays.
