What's closed and open Easter Weekend in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Welland

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Last year, for the first time, the federal government made it a statutory holiday but for federal employees only. Most provinces, including Ontario, have not followed suit. In fact, only two provinces and two territories followed the federal initiative – Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

There are now three federal holidays in the month of September – Labour Day, the third Monday to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and September 30. So what’s closed on Friday?

WHAT’S CLOSED:

  • Every Canada Post building in the Niagara Region will be closed and there will be no mail delivery. However, a Canada Post media relations person told us that the kiosks at the back of Shopper’s Drug Mart or other pharmacy outlets could decide for themselves whether or not to be open on Friday.
  • Every Service Canada Centre, traditionally where people go for passports and other federal issues, such as unemployment payments, will be closed. In Niagara Region, there are four.
  • In St. Catharines, there are two Service Canada Centres – 395 Ontario Street E & F and Pen Centre, 221 Glendale Ave, Entrance 5 (near Landmark Cinema)
  • In Welland, there is one Service Canada Centre – 250 Thorold Rd
  • In Niagara Falls, there is one Service Canada Centre – 6080 McLeod Rd
  • Most City and Town Halls are closed (call ahead) but municipal facilities, such as community centres and libraries will remain open.
  • Banks will be closed.
