You might see Andrew Phung in and around Hamilton over these next few days.

“Run The Burbs,” the CBC family comedy series headlined and partially created by the “Kim’s Convenience” alumnus, is currently filming its second season on the West Mountain. A quiet cul-de-sac has been transformed into a set, with a ranch-style home at 24 Leadale Pl. with a basketball hoop in the driveway being used for exterior shots. Interior scenes are filmed in a nearby studio.

The series, which is produced by Pier 21 Films, is scheduled to shoot in Hamilton for a total of five weeks this fall, with the episodes coming to CBC and CBC Gem in January 2023. Phung is the co-creator and plays stay-at-home Vietnamese-Canadian dad Andrew Pham, who, alongside his entrepreneurial South Asian wife Camille (Rakhee Morzaria), faces the unrelenting pressures of parenting their progeny Khia and Leo (Zoriah Wong and Roman Pesino).

Some of the series’ storylines are drawn from Phung’s lived experiences as a dad. The first season debuted last January.

Leadale Place is off Stacey Street, across from Buchanan Park. But there is access to the cul-de-sac from a walking path on the west side and, apparently, many curious fans have happened by to check on the production crews’ activity.

An island of greenspace on Leadale is also used to keep the film crews’ gear. A neighbour on the other side of the cul-de-sac has also signed on with the producers to provide a hydro connection and storage space in his family’s garage.

Before the series premiere last January, Phung told The Canadian Press that getting the series off the ground included making sure the show is inclusive and true to its characters. Advice from Vietnamese and South Asian cultural consultants was collected, and the series’ creators leaned on a local food consultant.

The first season of “Run The Burbs” can also be streamed on Apple TV+.
