A Brampton-based incubator of entrepreneurs and technology startups has a new name.

Back in April, the Ryerson University board of governors unanimously approved a motion to rename the institution the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) after public backlash surrounding the school’s namesake of Egerton Ryerson, and his ties to Canada’s residential school system.

The change has meant a rebranding of many university offshoots, including the newly-christened Brampton Venture Zone (BVZ) by TMU.

“The Zone remains dedicated to building and growing early stage, high potential technology startups in Brampton,” Toronto Metropolitan University spokesperson Jessica Leach said in a statement.

A joint partnership between the City of Brampton and Toronto Metropolitan University, the BVZ was formerly known as the Ryerson Venture Zone and supports the growth of new business by connecting entrepreneurs, with industry experts, backers, and customers.

When the name change was made official in April, the university was unable to confirm whether Brampton’s forthcoming new School of Medicine would bear the Ryerson name or not.

The institution will be the first new medical school in Ontario in over 30 years, and is set to receive 80 undergraduate seats and some 95 postgraduate positions.
