Section of King St. in downtown Hamilton remains closed

A street closure in downtown Hamilton, caused by part of a building falling on to the sidewalk, may extend into a sixth day.
The collapse of a building on the south side of King St. E. happened last Friday (Aug. 5), resulting in a closure between Emerald St. and East Ave., as well as a portion of Emerald St N. at King St E.. The building is being demolished, and just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 9), the City of Hamilton gave an update stating that the work remains ongoing.
“The roads will reopen as soon as it is (deemed) safe to do so,” a tweet reads. “We appreciate the community’s continued patience.”

Building Division staff had expressed a hope that the work would be completed by Sunday morning (Aug. 7).
The closure has led to some increased traffic volume on King William St. due to more motorists and the temporary presence of Hamilton Street Railway buses. Pedestrians who are in that area might need to exercise extra caution.
