First look at Mississauga’s new 24-storey state-of-the-art hospital

The new state-of-the-art Mississauga Hospital, when completed, will feature “cutting-edge technology” and one of Ontario’s largest emergency departments inside the 24-storey structure expected to be the biggest hospital anywhere in Canada.
Since plans for the new 950-bed healthcare facility are in the early stages, the exact cost to build the hospital isn’t yet known, nor is a timeline for construction.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said yesterday at Mississauga Hospital that the multibillion-dollar investment in Trillium Health Partners (THP), which operates Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in addition to Queensway Health Centre in neighbouring Etobicoke, is part of a larger $30.2-billion investment in Ontario hospitals over the next 10 years.
In addition to a new hospital in Mississauga, to be built at the same location as the existing facility at The Queensway and Hurontario St., the money earmarked for THP will also go towards extensive renovations at the Queensway site.
In total, the undertaking will add 350 hospital beds to Mississauga Hospital and 150 to Queensway.

While the Ontario government will pick up most of the tab, Mississauga will also contribute a yet-to-be-determined amount of money.
Mayor Bonnie Crombie, who yesterday called the project an “absolute game changer” for the hospital and city residents, said this morning it could take several years to determine the exact cost of the hospital, and the City of Mississauga’s contribution to the project.
“Those estimates have not yet been calculated,” said Crombie, noting “…(with) a project of this scale, size and scope, it’ll take probably a few years to know precisely what the specs will be.”
She added, “when we learn more about the square footage and the footprint, we’ll know more about the costing and the community contribution.”
The new Mississauga Hospital is a critical part of THP’s plan to build a new kind of health care for this growing and diverse community.

Major and long-overdue expansion plans have been in the works at Mississauga Hospital for some time now.
But yesterday’s official unveiling of a concrete investment from Ontario that Ford called “the single largest hospital infrastructure plan in Canadian history” has significantly moved things along for THP officials.
“The redevelopment and expansion projects at THP will ensure we have the modern facilities and much-needed capacity to deliver high-quality, exceptional care to this community for generations to come,” said THP president and CEO Karli Farrow.
According to THP, no hospital in Ontario has experienced greater demand for healthcare services than Mississauga Hospital. During the pandemic, THP has cared for one of the highest volumes of COVID-19 patients in the province, often in parts of Mississauga Hospital that were built more than 60 years ago.
And over the next 20 years, according to the Ontario government, the demand for healthcare services at THP is expected to increase by nearly seven times more than the average hospital in Ontario as Peel and Etobicoke continue to grow.
