7,600-square-metre Barbie exhibit makes world debut at Square One in Mississauga

A huge interactive exhibit featuring the iconic Barbie doll makes its global premiere this Friday (July 22) at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga.

Described by its creators as a “visually stunning immersion into the lifestyle of Barbie,” the 7,600-square-metre installation, set up in a standalone space, will be in Mississauga for the day before embarking on a tour across North America.

Created collaboratively by leading global children’s entertainment company Mattel and live entertainment firm Kilburn Live, World of Barbie features numerous Barbie “environments” designed with different generations of fans in mind.

The exhibit, a ticketed event, was inspired by the iconic doll’s many careers, the creators note.

Visitors will have an opportunity to explore Barbie’s neighbourhood streets, step into her Dreamhouse, sit inside her Camper Van and enjoy rooms inspired by some of her careers as a scientist, music producer, astronaut and more.

“This visually stunning immersion into the lifestyle of Barbie provides a unique opportunity to relive memories and revel in her lifestyle,” those behind the exhibit say.

“Beloved around the world, Barbie is a pop icon and inspiration to generations. Now, for the first time, fans will have the opportunity to walk in the iconic doll’s footsteps when World of Barbie makes its global premiere in a standalone space at Square One.”

After Friday, the massive exhibit will be on the move to a number of other North American cities including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

In a news release this past spring, Mark Manuel, of Kilburn Live, said the World of Barbie is meant to bring the character and her world to life.

“Barbie is as relevant today as she was when she was first introduced to the world 63 years ago,” Manuel said.

In addition to the Dreamhouse and Camper Van, visitors will also be able to explore Barbie’s fashion and TV studios and the Barbie Space Center.

A Barbie-themed café will also be available as well as a display that celebrates the history of the brand and its many themes and characters.

The exhibit will be set up just steps away from the Square One mall, at 199 Rathburn Rd. W.
