Many students returned to school Tuesday but a bus driver shortage is causing delays in Hamilton.

Around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, there were 71 delays reported on the Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services website. Most delays were around 10 to 20 minutes but some routes were as much as an hour behind schedule.

The transportation service is responsible for school buses to both the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

The delays are being blamed on a driver shortage reported across Ontario.

Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation was short about 25 drivers, according to news reports. Also, drivers are getting used to new routes and parents should expect some delays.

The service provides transport for about 28,000 students to 170 individual schools throughout the district.

Visit the Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation website for the latest information on bus delays and cancellations.
