Peel police say over 60 cats have been rescued in a recent animal cruelty case, for which a Mississauga man is now facing charges.
On April 1, officers learned from Animal Welfare Services (AWS) about multiple incidents in which kittens were sold in distressing conditions, and later died from their injuries shortly after being taken to their new homes.
Investigators and the AWS Major Incident Management Team conducted a search, resulting in the arrest of a man from Mississauga.
“During the execution of the search warrant, 57 kittens and eight adult cats were rescued and immediately transported to an animal rescue centre, where they received urgent veterinary care,” said police.
The cats are now in custody of Mississauga’s Animal Services Shelter.
Qiang Yu, 38, of Mississauga has been charged with 134 counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals.
Yu was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Investigators believe there are no other animals outstanding in this case.
