A $61-million renovation plan to dramatically upgrade the South Common Community Centre and Library in west Mississauga has produced a preliminary design of what the revamped facility could look like.

City of Mississauga officials overseeing the major overhaul of the Erin Mills-area complex are now taking their design plans to the public for feedback.

Members of the west Mississauga community can take part in an April 25 virtual information session, which begins at 6 p.m., or a public open house info session slated for April 28 starting at 2 p.m. (see Twitter post below).

Work is expected to begin in 2024 and a reopening date for the facility has yet to be set.

Built in 1981, the South Common Community Centre will see improvements to the library, expanded fitness spaces, a new aquatics centre and a new gymnasium. The library expansion will see an extra 16,000 sq. ft. added that will include multi-purpose rooms, officials say.

The improvements are meant to meet the changing needs of the community as well as give the facility a much-needed facelift, City officials said earlier.

In the summer of 2021, the City received $45 million from the provincial government to put towards the upgrades at South Common Community Centre.

Mississauga is adding its own $16 million to the massive project.

South Common Community Centre and Library has been “essential to the lives of many in the community, from youth to seniors,” Mississauga-Erin Mills MPP Sheref Sabawy said earlier.

South Common Community Centre was built more than 40 years ago and has largely remained the same over the years serving as a hub of community activities for Erin Mills and west Mississauga, especially since it has a close connection to South Common Mall.

An expansion of both indoor and outdoor fitness spaces as well as the aquatics area has been long sought by the community
