Theft and burglary continue to be an issue for Mississauga and Brampton residents as 60 incidents of break and enter were recorded in the region in the past 30 days.

According to Peel Police crime mapping data there have been 60 break and enters in the time between Aug. 3 and Aug. 31.

That means there were at least two break and enters occurring every day in the region in the past month.

26 of those incidents have happened at places of residence while the remaining 34 break and enters took place at construction sites, schools, stores, restaurants, gas stations, pharmacies, and offices.

Out of all 60 break and enters, 34 happened in Brampton and 26 happened in Mississauga.

Peel Police say some properties are more likely to be broken into such as corner lots, homes that back onto parks and other open spaces, and homes that do not appear to be maintained or “lived in.”

“Residential break-ins are typically crimes of opportunity,” Peel Police say. “Burglars typically target certain property based on characteristics that will increase their chances of breaking-in without getting caught.”

Residents are advised to maintain a safe home and prevent break-ins by following these tips:

  • Keep shrubs and hedges around your property maintained to allow for clear lines of sight to all accessible windows and doors.
  • Ensure garage and screen doors are locked, even while at home.
  • Get to know your neighbours and look out for each other’s properties.
  • Consider installing a second locking device for windows and any sliding doors.
