55-year-old man dies in three-vehicle crash on 401 in Pickering

Police say a 55-year-old man has been pronounced dead following a three-vehicle crash on the 401 in Pickering in the early morning hours of Dec. 30.

According to Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the collision, which occurred on the westbound 401 at Brock Rd. shortly after 5:00 am, involved one vehicle that was reportedly travelling the wrong way.

“Reports are that one of the vehicles was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with another vehicle,” Schmidt said in a video posted on Twitter.

“As a result of this collision, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene and two others were taken to hospital.”

According to the OPP, the driver of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction and one other motorist currently remain in hospital.

Police say the westbound 401 was blocked in the area and is expected to reopen around 1:00 pm.
