A Brampton family’s life has been changed after a mother and son duo teamed up to win a more than $510,000 lottery jackpot.

Bayzar Akrabian-Mardo and her son Antoun Akrabian from Brampton have been playing the lottery as a team for the last few years, playing a mixture of different games.

Bayzar was checking a ticket recently and was shocked to see she had scored the Dec. 5 Lightning Lotto jackpot of $510,323.

“I was so surprised and was jumping up and down,” Bayzar said while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up their winnings. “I texted Antoun and he didn’t believe me at first.”

After realizing the win was real, Antoun and Bayzar told other family members about the windfall, calling the money a “blessing.”

The family says they plan to use the money to pay some bills and are still deciding how to spend the rest of their winnings.

“All that matters to me is making sure my mother is happy,” Antoun said.

Lightning Lotto players can win a jackpot on the spot by matching all five numbers in any one line, with 1 in 4.47 odds of winning any prize, the OLG says. The OLG says it supports safe play and responsible gambling through its PlaySmart program.

The winning ticket was purchased at Red Maple Convenience on Red Maple Drive in Brampton.
