An in-person gathering for Truth and Reconciliation Week could bring 5,000 high school students to Mississauga.

Truth and Reconciliation Week, from Sept. 26-30, is a national program produced by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

This year, for the first time, the event includes a live, stage program titled Gidinawendimin – We Are All Related at Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga on Sept. 29. Teachers and students can join the event virtually or in person.

The live event will feature some of Turtle Island’s best performers, and help students learn about Indigenous culture, languages, and traditions. The students will hear about the history of residential schools from survivors, Indigenous performers, activists and Knowledge Keepers.

“Most of all, we will be remembering the children that did not come home from residential schools,” the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation notes on the event website.

The program is getting support from nine community foundations in the Golden Horseshoe region —Brampton and Caledon, Burlington, Halton North, Mississauga, Durham Region, Hamilton, Niagara, Oakville and Toronto.

“The journey towards Truth and Reconciliation started with the TRC but there is still work to be done before we see parity for all those living from coast to coast to coast. Educating our youth is a crucial piece of this work,” said Glenn Gumulka, CEO of the Community Foundation of Mississauga.

Educators from across the country can register to participate virtually in the free program.
