The year was 1975 and people everywhere were being urged by those who’d seen the newly released blockbuster movie Jaws not to go in the water.

Author Stephen King, for decades widely known as the “King of Horror,” released his second novel, Salem’s Lot, Captain & Tennille sang about how “Love Will Keep Us Together” (Billboard’s No. 1 song of 1975), the Toyota Corolla was among the world’s best-selling cars, ground-breaking TV show All in the Family topped the ratings for parents while the kids were entertained by the first television show appearance of famed cartoon duo Tom and Jerry — and the colour burnt orange was all the rage when talking about home decor.

More locally, in Mississauga’s west end, a neighbourhood library opened its doors to the community for the first time 50 years ago.

Woodlands Library, located right beside The Woodlands Secondary School in Erindale, opened to the public in 1975 and it’s laying out the welcome mat again this weekend for a 50th anniversary celebration.

City of Mississauga officials say the community is invited this Saturday to help mark “half a century of learning and literacy with a free community event featuring interactive activities, sweet treats and remarks from special guests. Families will be treated to a fun afternoon.”

The event, which is free to attend and runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., includes:

  • a princess and superhero visit: stories, sing-alongs and more
  • ’70s-themed decorations and activity tables
  • disco karaoke
  • retro story time in the garden
  • a fire truck on site
  • a visit from the city’s Animal Services team
  • a meet-and-greet with Ward 6 Coun. Joe Horneck
  • giant inflatable slide for kids
  • refreshments, including cotton candy and lemonade
  • giveaways including swag, temporary tattoos and colouring activities

Woodlands Library is located at 3255 Erindale Station Rd.
