Family Day, the first statutory holiday since New Year’s, is one that many of us look forward to in the midst of winter.

This year, Family Day falls on Monday, Feb. 20, and whether you’re planning to spend the day with your kids, parents or friends, there are plenty of things to do in Mississauga.

So, without further ado, here are five things to do on Family Day.

Check out this dinosaur-themed event

A dinosaur-themed event is coming to Celebration Square in Mississauga on Family Day weekend. The event, which will take place from Feb. 17 to 20, 2023, will feature free family-friendly dino-themed activities, an indoor artisan market and a food truck line-up.

Guests will be able to take photos with four life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and watch as velociraptors, triceratops and a 20 ft long Baryonyx come to life around the Square.

There will also be screenings of ’90s nostalgic movies such as The Land Before Time (on Saturday and Sunday) and an interactive show for kids called Jurassic Live on Monday.

Spend the day at Square One

Between the endless amount of stores and food options at the food court, Food District and various restaurants in the mall, there is always lots to do and see at Square One.

So, gather the family for a full-day excursion that can include playing some games at the Rec Room, walking around and grabbing a bite to eat.

Psst! The Food District will have a Filipino brioche pop-up spot this long weekend, so check it out while you can.

Go to the movies

Another great way to spend Family Day is by going to the movies.

Most theatres in Mississauga will be open, including the one across from Square One. Just make sure to check the schedules ahead of time to make sure the movie you’re interested in is playing that day.

At Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga, movies such as Magic Mike’s Last Dance and Avatar: The Way of Water will be playing on Family Day.

Go for an outdoor skate

Skating is always a good idea, especially at Celebration Square, where you can skate on the City’s largest outdoor ice rink with the family. The ice rink is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

And, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to go skating somewhere else, the City also has over 30 natural rinks to choose from.

Go on a family outing to Illumi

For those who haven’t gotten a chance to check out this light, sound and multimedia festival called Illumi, Family Day may be a good opportunity to do so.

The event is located at 7174 Derrycrest Dr. and features more than 20 million lights separated into 14 universes. Each universe features music and its own theme, making it a fun and immersive experience for the entire family or a group of friends.
