We’ve said it many times and we’ll say it again—we would put Mississauga’s restaurant scene up against anyone else’s.

The city’s food scene is as diverse as it is exciting, and it welcomes highly anticipated restos each and every year. Although 2019 was marked by the opening of The Food District in Square One, we expect 2020 to be a big year for the city’s foodies.

Here’s a look at some exciting restaurants that are slated to open in 2019 in Mississauga (in no particular order).

5) Via Cibo Italian Street Food

Those who love street food of the European variety might be happy to hear that Via Cibo, a unique (and expanding) Italian restaurant, will be taking over the old Montana’s location at Eglinton and Hurontario in the not-too-distant future. According to the website, Via Cibo uses authentic, traditional ingredients and pays tribute to slow cooking with made from scratch dishes.

As far as food goes, Via Cibo says it’s well-known for its Italian piadina, a staple of Italian street food. Piadina is a flatbread that originates from the Emilia-Romagna region (namely Forli-Cesena, Ravenna and Rimini) and is typically made with 100 per cent artisan durum wheat flour, cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil, Mediterranean Sea salt and spring water.

The restaurant also serves pasta, paninos, pizza, salad, chicken parmigiana, veal, calamari, bruschetta, dessert and more.

4) Huevos Gourmet

This past July, fans of Huevos Gourmet—an absolutely incredible Mexican breakfast and brunch restaurant—were stunned to hear that the restaurant was leaving its cozy Mimico location to relocate to parts unknown. Later, we learned that Huevos Gourmet has chosen to relocate to Port Credit. The restaurant, which should be opening soon, is taking shape in the old Dunk n’ Dip location on Lakeshore Road East in the city’s east end—not terribly far from where it was located before.

Along with huevos rancheros (which is made all the more special with a heaping helping of chorizo on top), the restaurant also serves a ton of Eggs Benedict dishes (including a Mexican Benedict and a taco benedict), Mexican omelettes, breakfast burritos, crepes, French toast and more.

3) The Dapper Doughnut

If you love a good, creative, elevated doughnut, you are in luck—a very popular gourmet doughnut shop is moving north of the border and setting up its first Ontario location in Mississauga in 2020. The Dapper Doughnut, which offers apple cider sugar, birthday cake, PB&J, Smore, Turtle and other creatively flavoured doughnuts, is slated to open its new flagship shop at 5027 Spectrum Way in spring 2020.

Jesse Prasad, the operations manager with the Canadian division of The Dapper Doughnut, told insauga.com that two other stores will be opening afterwards—possibly in the Toronto and Brampton areas. The shop will also serve gourmet coffee, tea and soft-serve ice cream (which can be used in cones, doughnut sundaes and doughnut parfaits).

2) Uncle Tetsu

The Food District in Square One has already welcomed hordes of hungry diners in search of on-trend food to the shopping centre, and it’s now home to the truly beloved (and globally successful) chain. Uncle Tetsu, the Japanese cheesecake chain that’s generated around-the-block lineups in Toronto, just opened a pop-up shop, but will–thankfully–open a permanent shop in the new year in The Food District.  The permanent shop is expected to open early in 2020.

1) Junxion

A few months ago, Mississauga City Councillor Pat Saito announced that the former Sears location in Erin Mills Town Centre was going to be transformed into a movie theatre and entertainment complex. In November, Cineplex announced plans for Junxion, a first-of-its-kind concept that features a movie theatre, dining destination and entertainment complex all in one place.

The 45,000 square foot space will include six auditoriums, a food hall featuring an indoor food truck, amusement gaming, a space for live events (including live music) and an outdoor screen on a rooftop patio. The space will also contain a bar that will serve wine and craft beer.

The brand new complex is targeted to open in late 2020.

Cineplex also says Junxion’s state-of-the-art cinemas will offer a range of movie-going experiences, including UltraAVX and comfortable recliners where guests can have food and drinks delivered right to their seats.
