It’s that time of the year again—Valentine’s Day in Mississauga. I’m sure you didn’t forget, because how could you?

Between the ramped up chocolate and teddy bear sections at every drugstore and the lovey-dovey heart decal displays at the jewellery stores, we are constantly reminded that this blessed/dreaded (take your pick) day is almost upon us.

Whether you’re in the Valentines-is-just-a-Hallmark-holiday camp or consider yourself a hopeless romantic who still dreams of someone showing up under your window with a boom box, one thing is for sure—no one can escape the hype.

Perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle and just want to plan a date, because hey—an excuse to celebrate that someone special is still pretty nice.

If you are planning on a romantic dinner at one of Mississauga’s many restaurants, I hope you made your reservation already! However, if you are considering trying something a little different this Valentine’s Day (or just haven’t gotten around to making that res just yet), then read on.

I’ve compiled some ideas to shake up your regular dinner date on February 14.

5) Couples Massage at one of Mississauga’s Spas

Life can get pretty hectic, and maybe we rely on Valentine’s Day the way we do is because we forget to take time to really appreciate and celebrate our love all the other days in the year. A couple’s massage is a great way to spend time together and it’s just really good for you both individually.

As for where you can go, there are couple’s spa packages available at The Glenerin Inn and The Waterside Inn.

This is a great way to unwind together, and it’s pretty darn romantic. Cue the instrumental music and pour the bubbly.

4) Check Out an Art Exhibit

If you and your paramour are a little more cerebral, you might want to skip dinner and head right to a cultural institution. If you appreciate more local creations, note that Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) is currently hosting its Art of Dialogue Exhibit. According to VAM, the Art of Dialogue is a youth exhibition “supporting emerging artists working in experimental processes using a combination of traditional and new media and making a statement with their work about creativity, experience, and the world!”

VAM’s property is beautiful enough for a date, so you’ll enjoy walking the grounds as you discuss the art.

The exhibition is until Feb. 18.

3) Book a Fancier Prix Fixe Dinner

While some might think the traditional Valentine’s Day dinner is overdone, it’s a staple for a reason. Dining together is inherently intimate, as you have to spend at least an hour connecting over a nice meal. If you’re looking for a special meal, you can enjoy a special four-course dinner at Border MX’s brand new Streetsville location. Some items

You can also celebrate Valentine’s Day at Port House with a three-course dinner for $37. There will also be live music from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

2) Get Your Adrenaline Pumping in an Escape Room

This one is for you adrenaline junkies out there. If locking yourself in a room and hatching an escape plan with your date sounds like fun then we’ve got just the thing. All of the room escapes on this list feature different themed rooms where you and your date (or your friends, whatever you choose) need to accomplish an objective and work together to break out of the room. This might not be your typical Valentine’s idea, but it’s a great option if you feel like doing something completely out of the ordinary. It could also strengthen how the two of you work together, yay bonding!

1) Head Over to Scooter’s Roller Palace

I love old-timey things, and the fact that Mississauga has a roller disco has always made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Scooter’s is an large indoor skating rink that is chock full of nostalgia and has been around since 1975. If you feel like turning back the clock a little, I would suggest busting out your most 70s inspired outfit and taking your main squeeze out to the roller rink. You can share a Coke after, and try your luck at the arcade after your legs have had enough of skating around. If you want to get your skate on on Valentine’s Day, the rink is open from 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. and the fun will only cost you $9.50.

BONUS:

Valentine’s Day might seem non-inclusive to Mississauga’s many singles, but there are ton of activities that are perfect for singles–especially those who are ready to mingle.

If you head over to El Mariachi Tacos and Churros on Thursday, Feb. 15, you can check out the “Okay, Mingle!” charity speed dating event. The event, which costs $10 to enter, kicks off at 8:00 p.m. and offers local singles a chance to get to know one another.

Hey–it’s a lot more social than swiping left and right!

The proceeds from this event will be going towards Justice for Children and Youth
