One of the best kept secrets in Mississauga is Fred's Bar & Grill. Locals and regulars already know this, but the lemon tomato grilled calamari is legendary. This place recently went through a reno and the new digs offer 26 TVs and two 80" babies on the wall, so there is not a bad vantage point anywhere in the restaurant. You can find Fred's hidden in a small plaza in central Mississauga. It serves up some of the best bar food and has great service. The old faithful don't have to worry, as they have not changed the menu and still have some of the best wings and calamari in the city. This little place is great for chilling, hanging out, watching sports and getting to know and/or impress someone on a date.
4 - The Wilcox
The Wilcox Gastropub is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga's oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I'm going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn't disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that's dedication!
Steak and Frites
3 - Pizza Nostra
Nostra means “our” in Italian and the resto’s name translates to “Our Pizza." Their specialty is New Jersey style pizza and hoagies. What makes Jersey-style pizza different from the rest is the crust. Notable for its crispy and chewy texture, it takes eight minutes to cook in Nostra’s stone ovens. The Grande brothers make all of their ingredients from scratch, from the cured meats to the sauce and dough used for both the pizza and hoagies. Many of the ingredients, including the cheese and meat, are hand-cut. They also make a mean Philly Cheese steak sandwich as seen in the cover shot.
2- Fired Up
Fired Up! Woodfire Barbeque Company is Mississauga’s first BBQ restaurant that boasts an open concept, street-side cookery right in the heart of Port Credit. It’s an impressive restaurant-front that exposes Executive Chef Luis Vultao and his team of grillardins who are literally on street-side display, encircled with fire from the woodfire grills where they display their craft. The 1,500 square foot space (formerly a Gino’s Pizza) was completely gutted and is surprisingly more spacious than the corner unit appears to be. The resto design is masculine but cozy and filled with reclaimed Canadian wood such as hemlock and maple, plus 250 year old barn boards. You will find everything from game meats such as venison, Australian lamb from Opal Valley, ostrich, pork belly, wild boar, and seafood such as ahi tuna, swordfish, octopus and prawns, burgers, poutine’s and a variety of salads on the menu.
Grilled Jumbo Prawns
Corner is a new cafe which combines a casual dining experience in a contemporary designed space and offers a global menu that caters to a wide variety of palates. The concept, by Spoon & Fork, is the brand’s first quick-service restaurant. The popular brand is a family run business, well known for their contribution to the Asian restaurant scene having started their first Japanese restaurant called Prince Japanese Steakhouse back in 1996. Food Menu: Corner’s Asian and European menu includes a wide variety of options that include freshly baked pastries (croissants, scones, muffins, brownies, donuts, danishes, cinnamon buns); sushi burritos, desserts (French macarons, tarts, cupcakes, cakes); all day breakfast (benedicts, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, french toast); sushi trays (made fresh daily and on-site). The Mum Bowl is a fun Thai-inspired menu where you can mix and match over 50 different ingredient options to create your own personalized dish.
