5 beaches in Bowmanville, Oshawa and Port Perry posted as unsafe for swimming this week

Just as the weekend weather is set to be sunny and warm, five beaches are deemed unsafe for swimming this week in Durham region.

Durham Region tests 15 public beaches weekly throughout the summer as part of its beach monitoring program.

Tests on water samples check for high levels of bacteria and, in particular, e-coli, to let beach visitors know which beaches are safe for swimming. Bacteria could cause an infection, which could result in minor skin issues, eye, nose or throat infections, or an upset stomach.

For the week of July 11 the following beaches are posted as unsafe:

• Beaverton South Beach (Simcoe St. and Harbour Park Cres.),
• Bowmanville East (Port Darlington Rd. and East Beach Rd.)
• Bowmanville West (West Beach Rd. and Cove Rd.)
• Lakeview Beach West in Oshawa (Kluane Ave. and Lakeview Park Ave.)
• Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry (Palmer Park – Water St. and Mary St.)

Durham’s other beaches are listed as safe for swimming, including Paradise Beach in Ajax; the other Lake Simcoe beaches near Beaverton — Beaverton North and Thorah Centennial Park; one Clarington beach — Newcastle Beach Central; one Oshawa beach — Lakeview Beach East; Frenchman’s Bay East and Frenchman’s Bay West and East in Pickering; Whitby Beach; Iroquois Beach (Gordon St. and Waterfront Trail); and Elgin Pond in Uxbridge.
