With the transfer of their transit levy to Niagara Region, Welland has tabled an enviable budget that will see a 3.05 per cent tax decrease on residents’ local tax bill.

While that will come back at Welland homeowners to an unknown degree when the regional budget is rubber-stamped, it is still a tough-to-accomplish feat at the municipal level.

The 2023 operating budget totals just over $107 million for the city after it saw assessment growth of 2.74 per cent and includes over $31.1 million in capital projects this year.

“After a thorough and comprehensive budget review process, the City has passed its 2023 budgets in the best interest of the Welland resident,” said Steven Fairweather, Welland’s director of finance and CFO.

“The 2023 budget reflects a commitment to infrastructure, community services and preparing for the growth the city will welcome in the coming years.”

Big budget items in Welland this year will see over $20 million put towards the following investments:
• $3 million for parks
• $9.7 million for roads
• $2.1 million for sidewalks
• $2.6 million for storm sewers
• $3.1 million for Fire Station 3
