The Hamilton Police Service is investigating the city’s fourth driving fatality of 2021.

Wednesday (May 26), shortly before 5:30 p.m., a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox SUV travelling northbound reportedly rear-ended a 2016 Kia Sonata that was stopped at the traffic lights at Centennial Parkway and King St East.

The collision then forced the Kia into the rear of a 2014 Jeep Patriot.

Both occupants of the Kia were transported to the hospital and are being treated for their minor injuries.

The occupants in the Jeep were uninjured.

The occupants in the Equinox were transported to the hospital with critical injuries. A short time later, however, the driver of the Equinox, 43-year-old Mario Tocco of Hamilton died in hospital.

“Speed and driver impairment have not yet been ruled out as contributing factors in the collision,” said police.
