$40-million upgraded community centre ready to reopen in Mississauga

A community centre in Mississauga that has been closed for years is ready to re-open.

The Carmen Corbasson Community Centre has been closed while it undergoes a $40-million overhaul at its 1399 Cawthra Road location.

One of the key components of the revamped facility will be a new state-of-the-art aquatics centre that will feature a 25-metre, six-lane pool. Other new features will be a warm water therapy pool and a fitness centre.

The hockey arena has also received significant upgrades as have other areas of the community centre as part of the major facelift.

According to Ward 1 City Councillor Stephen Dasko the facility is scheduled to re-open on March 31.

Dasko said the upgrades were needed to address population growth and changing demographics in the area.

“The redevelopment at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre will see enhanced recreational services for the community and bring greater accessibility and green building standards,” city officials said in an earlier project update.

Originally named the Cawthra Road Community, the facility was built in 1972. It was renamed to commemorate the service of former Councillor Carmen Corbasson who died in 2012.

Once completed, the renovated facility will include:

• a fitness centre with cardio machines, weights and fitness studio with wood sprung floor
• a new aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a warm water therapy pool
• a new multi-purpose space
• enhancements to existing multi-purpose spaces
• renovations to the indoor arena
• improved connections to the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre
• improved sustainable and accessible design standards
• improvements to the hockey arena

Plans for a re-opening ceremony have yet to be announced.
