A four-year-old boy in Hamilton was seriously injured on Monday night after being struck by a driver on a one-way street.

Media reports, Hamilton Police and Ward 3 Coun. Nrinder Nann, said the child was hit while on Sherman Avenue North near Case and Clinton streets around 5:30 p.m.. Northbound Sherman N. was closed from just before 6 a.m. until 2 a.m. this morning (July 5). The boy’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The police said that speed and/or impairment were nont factors in the collision. They are asking witnesses, or anyone with dash camera video that may assist with the investigation, to contact their collision reconstruction unit (905-546-4755).

Nann said she would be calling for a safety audit of the intersection. The councillor said in a Facebook Live session that the collision illustrates the urgency for Hamilton to make its streets safer for all users. A cyclist was also killed after being hit on Tuesday morning, and nine pedestrians have died in the city this year after being hit by motorists.

“Every one-point-something days a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle,” Nann said. “I wish we had different statistics but our streets are not made for community use — they are designed for people to speed.

“Our streets need to be designed for the needs of all users,” she added. “Those needs are that of a child. This happened in an intersection, where the driver clearly wasn’t paying attention to stop in time while this young person, on their neighbourhood road, was crossing the street.”

The collision came less than 48 hours before city councillors were due to discuss and vote on several measures around street safety in Hamilton. At a public works committee on Wednesday, city staff will present on a Complete Streets Design Manual. The annual collision report will also be shared with councillors.

As well, staff will present the results of a safety audit of the intersection of Wellington St. N. and Barton St. E. That audit was ordered last December after 65-year-old Manuel DeSouza, who was driving a mobility scooter, died after being hit by the driver of a dump truck.
