Mississauga has a reputation for being a major foodie destination, with amazing restaurants serving delicious cultural cuisines from all over the world.
But it’s a big city, which is why Visit Mississauga has partnered with renowned food critic and enthusiast Suresh Doss to explore Mississauga’s best cultural hubs and under-the-radar spots and help foodies find the city’s best hidden gems.
In the latest episode of Suresh’s “Next Time You’re Here” video series, he ventures to the Mississauga Flea Market to check out the many scrumptious food offerings from its culturally diverse vendors.
This popular market is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, located west of the major intersection Mavis Road and Dundas Street West. Coming alive every weekend, tons of shoppers flock here to buy everything from fresh produce to textiles to household/beauty products, while stopping by at the food court for a bite to eat.
The food court at the flea market is a global celebration of food, with cuisines ranging from Southeast Asian to West African to Central and South American.
“The best thing about this food court is you can bring a group of friends, all go in different directions and get different things, then bring it back to the table, and you have a multicultural spread all in one place,” said Suresh.
The variety of vendor options helps the food court accommodate all kinds of eaters, including vegetarians, vegans, and those with dietary restrictions.
Pro tip: Carry cash when visiting the food court, as not all vendors accept cards.
Next time you’re here in Mississauga, check out these amazing food vendors at the Mississauga Flea Market:
La Patrona:
Located near the back of the food court is where you’ll find Mexican stall La Patrona, run by the Contreras family hailing from Mexico City. The stall serves up delicious and authentic Mexican street food and breakfast food, including savoury beef tacos, carnitas, sopes, and their large quesadillas stuffed with cheese and sour cream and topped with homemade salsa. With so much good stuff here, it’s recommended to visit with a friend so you can try and share different things!
Doubles & Roti Shop:
One of the longest-running vendors in the food court, the Doubles & Roti Shop has been serving satisfied customers for 16 years now. They’re Bangladesh-owned, Guyana-inspired, and best known for offering traditional Trinidadian staples such as doubles: flavourful curried chickpeas served on fried roti flatbread. The menu, which also features sahina, bigonie, and potato pie, has been known to bring in customers from all over Ontario.
Kechua:
Kechua is the newest vendor to join the flea market, but they’ve already made a strong impression with their offerings of delicious and authentic Peruvian food. Their signature dish is Papa a la Huancaína, a dish of hard-boiled potatoes served with a mouthwatering blend of Peruvian yellow peppers, onion, garlic, and topped with a creamy cheese sauce. The team at Kechua comes from a small town in Peru, and now they’re here to share with us the authentic tastes and flavours they grew up with.
Jerk Chicken:
Another staple of the market for 16 years, the Jerk Chicken stand serves up irresistibly delicious jerk chicken smothered in gravy – the rhythmic sound of chicken being chopped in the kitchen is part of the experience! Their menu also features other beloved Jamaican dishes, including specialty soups, Jamaican beef patties, and oxtail, and all of their meat is made halal. Going into their 17th year, the booth has people coming from all over the GTA and Ontario to try their famous jerk chicken.
There’s many more incredible vendors to check out, both inside the food court and throughout the rest of the flea market! See them for yourself by visiting the Mississauga Flea Market on Saturdays and Sundays.
