Provincial MPPs to make major Bowmanville Hospital funding announcement March 11

Bowmanville Hospital’s re-development plan will be getting a fast-track next Friday when local and semi-local MPPs arrive in town for a major funding announcement.
The details of the March 11 presentation by David Piccini, MPP for nearby Northumberland-Peterborough South (and the Environment Minister) and Whitby MPP Lorne Coe are being embargoed until 1 pm that day but with an election just two months away it’s clear it is going to be a good day for Lakeridge Health and Bowmanville.
The funding announcement will also likely mean the first shovel in the ground will be happening sooner than scheduled.
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster members of the Lakeridge Health Board of Trustees will also be in attendance.
The re-development of the Bowmanville Hospital, which will include a mix of new construction and renovations and include a new helipad, is expected to double the size of the facility.
The re-development has been top of mind in Clarington for many years and got a big boost when funding was promised by Queen’s Park in the 2019 budget. That same year the Municipality of Clarington gifted the hospital $5 million.

Last year the Province threw in another $2.5 million for planning and the Region of Durham included a dedicated levy of .25 per cent in this year’s budget, which converts to about $1.9 million. Last year the Region chipped in more than $37 million.

Bowmanville Hospital is home to the Regional Eye Centre and is a full-service community hospital serving people across Durham Region.
