31 robberies, 19 with guns in the last 30 days in Mississauga and Brampton

Guns appear in instances of robbery more than twice as often as other offensive weapons in Mississauga and Brampton.

According to the Peel Police crime map, 31 robberies have occurred in the last month.

Out of those 31 incidents, 19 of them involved the use of a gun. That’s over half of the total robberies for the time period.

The remaining 12 robberies are reported to have involved “other offensive weapons”.

The 31 robberies occurred between July 3 and July 27.

Brampton saw a higher number of robberies than Mississauga during that time with 20 separate incidents happening in the city.

The remaining 11 robberies happened in Mississauga.

20 out of the 31 robbery incidents happened in Brampton while the remaining 11 happened in Mississauga.

Brampton had higher numbers than Mississauga again when considering how many of the robberies in each city involved a gun.

Out of the 20 robberies that happened in Brampton, 16 of them involved a gun. In Mississauga, only 3 of the 11 robberies involved a gun.

An example of one of these armed robberies happened on July 15 shortly before 7 p.m.

Two men robbed an unidentified store near Clark Blvd. and Central Park Dr. in Brampton, making off with several pieces of jewelry.

A witness says they saw one of the men holding a gun.

The first suspect is described as a white man wearing a black sweater, grey sweatpants and white shoes. The second suspect is described as a black man wearing a black hoodie and pants, black shoes and a green durag.

Peel Police recommend the following robbery preventions tips for businesses in the region.

Robbery Prevention Tips

  • Aim to be a good shop-neighbor and form community partnerships with other retailers or property managers
  • Provide all staff with robbery prevention training.
  • Ensure there is a properly working surveillance camera system.
  • Ensure you have proper lighting inside and outside the premise, and maintain them.
  • Reduce the amount of cash on hand by making frequent cash drops.
  • Use store layout – store layout is critical in reducing crime and a properly formatted store will reduce theft and loss.
    • Have low shelving to improve view of customers.
    • Place shelves in a way that allows employees to see between the aisles from the sales counter.
    • Remove all excessive window signage or clutter from the sales area and other critical lines of sight.
