Three elementary schools in Brampton had more than one-quarter of their staff and students away last Friday.

All three are in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic board (DPCDSB), which recently said it will resume notifying parents about presumed positive COVID-19 cases. The highest rate reported in Brampton last Friday was 29.2 per cent at St. Joseph School, which is on Parkway Avenue.

St. Rita Elementary School reported a 27.5 absence rate, and Sacred Heart reported 25.3. Under the province’s system of at-large reporting, it is unknown how much COVID-19 influences an individual school’s absence rate.

Overall, though, schools with a 20 per cent absence rate were less common in Brampton at the end of last week than in neighbouring Mississauga.

Sixteen out of 121 schools in Brampton reported their absence data were above 20%. That is 13.2%.

In Mississauga, 27 out of 144 reporting schools were above the 20% threshold. That is 18.8%.

Eleven of the 16 Brampton schools are part of Peel District School Board, the public board. While the three highest rates were at Catholic schools, only two other schools in DPCDSB were above 20 per cent.
