CAA's annual worst roads list includes major mississauga street.
Hurontario Street in Mississauga has been named among the worst roads in Ontario for the past four years. Ongoing construction of the Hazel McCallion Line has added to frustrations experienced by drivers and area businesses.

Mississauga has some work to do — significant work — to improve several of its major roads, results from an annual survey conducted by the CAA show.

One main route in particular in Canada’s seventh-largest city seems to be in need of the most attention.

Having placed in the top 10 on the CAA’s annual list of the worst roads in Ontario each of the past three years, Hurontario Street in Mississauga has shot up that list into second place in the latest rankings, released Thursday morning by the South Central Ontario chapter of the nationwide organization.

The Mississauga section of Hurontario Street, among the busiest roads in the city, trailed only Barton Street East in Hamilton on the 2026 list (see below).

The busy Mississauga route was fifth on the list both last year and in 2024 following its debut in the rankings in 2023 when Hurontario Street placed 10th.

The CAA’s Worst Roads rankings rely each year upon public feedback to determine roads in the roughest state of disrepair — or with other safety issues — across the province.

The annual CAA survey identifies the worst roads in Ontario, according to the public.

Hurontario Street in Mississauga, which for several years has been undergoing heavy construction due to installation of the Hazel McCallion Line light-rail transit route, is the lone Peel road to crack the CAA’s latest top 10 list.

Beyond the top two spots in this year’s rankings, the survey results move north in identifying Notre Dame Avenue in Sudbury as the province’s third-worst road. Sider Road in Fort Erie and Steeles Avenue East in Toronto, at fourth and fifth, respectively, complete the top five.

The CAA kicked off its 23rd Worst Roads advocacy campaign in late March. Through the initiative, it attempts to give decision-makers in municipalities across Ontario a snapshot of the roads members of the public perceive as not meeting their expectations.

“Poor roads affect us all. They make us late, cause delivery delays, contribute to congestion and, most importantly, endanger those who use them,” the CAA said in launching its latest campaign earlier this spring.

Over the last two months, people visited the CAA website to register their vote for roads, streets and boulevards that are filled with cracks and potholes or present other issues including traffic congestion and unsafe bicycle lanes.

Historically, respondents have identified potholes, poor road maintenance and traffic congestion as their biggest complaints.

Pothole damage to a vehicle can cost from $500 to $2,000, depending on the car model, CAA officials said earlier, adding the most recent average repair cost is $933 — an $81 increase from 2024.
