Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) respond to a serious collision involving two vehicles in Whitby early this morning (July 17).

Officers were called to Lakeridge Rd. just south of Dundas St. West shortly after 5 a.m. after reports of a head-on collision.

Police say a black 2007 Honda Civic was heading northbound on Lakeridge Rd. when it crossed over the centre line and collided with a southbound, white 2021 Jeep Cherokee.

The 24-year-old driver of the Honda Civic sustained extensive injuries as a result of the collision. The man was treated on scene by Whitby Fire and Durham EMS before being rushed to a Toronto based trauma centre as his condition worsened.

Police say the 24-year-old Whitby man remains in hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 32-year-old Whitby man, did not receive any serious injuries and was released from the scene.

The section of Lakeridge Rd. south of Dundas St. was closed for several hours while members of the DRPS Traffic Services Branch and the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated.

Evidence was collected and police say the area was also canvassed for video evidence.

Anyone with information or drivers who have dash cam video of this collision are asked to call Detective Constable Brett Rayne of the Traffic Services Branch at 905-579-1520 (toll free 1-888-579-1520) ext. 5256.
