OPP/SIU 407 Report

A 23-year-old Brampton woman was struck and killed as she stood on the shoulder of Hwy. 401 in Mississauga early this morning (Oct. 1).

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said that two vehicles were involved in an initial, minor collision around 4:45 a.m. and pulled to the left shoulder of westbound Hwy. 401 just west of Dixie. Rd.

A third vehicle pulled over and an individual got out and engaged in conversation with the first two drivers.

All three people were standing behind their vehicles when a fourth vehicle came upon the scene and struck one of them.

Police say a 23-year-old woman from Brampton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

“Obviously a very tragic outcome here,” Schmidt said. “We always ask people to get off the highways as quickly as possible just to prevent any type of tragedy like this from happening.”

All traffic intended for the Hwy. 401 collector lanes is being redirected to Dixie Rd., but police say they are working to have the roadway opened before noon.
