Doug Ford’s Conservatives are promising a massive expansion of GO train service if the party is returned to office.

In an announcement in Brampton today (Feb. 6), current Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced the ambitious plan to bring 23 new stations across the Golden Horseshoe along with expanded service through new and existing lines.

The new stations would accommodate new passenger lines running across mid-town Toronto, direct service from Bolton to Union Station, and more lines into the York Region.

Also, Sarkaria said there will be expanded two-way service for Kitchener and Milton passengers.

The Conservatives also plan to lay down tracks adjacent to Highway 407 in Peel Region that will be used exclusively for freight traffic.

This would be done to free up existing lines for passenger usage, said Sarkaria.

Called GO 2.0, Sarkaria said the transformational project will ease gridlock and bring millions of people closer to convenient transit in some of Ontario’s fastest-growing communities.

If it proceeds, the project by the Ontario government would be completed in partnership with the federal government and the two railroads, Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National.

No frame has been given for the project and the cost has not been revealed.
