Window closing to give feedback on new water service transfer in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon

To meet the accelerated growth in Brampton, a combined 22 construction projects are currently underway or will commence soon to make sure drinking water is available and wastewater is collected from current and future homes.

Carried out by the Region of Peel, the “Flow Program” is meant to speed up the process of water and wastewater construction in the region using innovative techniques to support home development.

Most of the projects will take place in Brampton using advanced technologies and alternative methods for flexibility, agility, and efficient resource and budget allocation in the construction process. The region says this approach will allow it to rapidly adapt and deliver the many supporting projects of the program on time and within budget.

“While Peel Region doesn’t build homes, we do make sure what’s needed below ground is ready to accommodate building communities above it,” according to information supplied by the region. “This includes providing the infrastructure required to access safe, reliable drinking water and to properly collect and treat wastewater.”

The accelerated construction program is needed because of Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, which was introduced by the Ontario government in its desire to meet the demand for more housing. The aim of the Bill is to build 1.5 million more homes in Ontario over the next 10 years.

This means that growth will occur faster than originally planned. For Peel Region, this calls for housing targets to be met by 2031, 20 years sooner than planned. In Brampton, it translates to an additional 113,000 new residential units to be built in that shorter time frame.

“These provincial housing targets have drastically accelerated the demand for water, wastewater, and road infrastructure, at rates almost five times that of Peel’s historical growth,” according to Peel Region.

A public meeting to discuss the Flow Program will take place tomorrow, May 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brampton City Hall.

Construction maps and detail about the locations of the projects can be found here.
