Two women have reported sexual assaults in a popular Orangeville park.
The two separate assaults were reported in Island Lake Conservation Area on June 13 and June 16, the Ontario Provincial Police said. The 820-acre park is located at the headwaters of the Credit River, and is popular for walking, paddling, fishing and picnics.
On Saturday, June 13, at approximately 1 p.m., a 29-year-old woman was approached by an older man who engaged in unwanted physical contact, police said.
And then on Tuesday, June 16, at approximately 11 a.m., a 28-year-old woman reported being approached by an older man matching the description provided from the earlier incident, the OPP said.
Police said unwanted physical contact was also reported in the second incident.
The person is described as a bald, South Asian man, around 50 to 60 years old.
Both incidents remain under active investigation, police said.
The OPP said officers are increasing patrols in and around the conservation area to enhance public safety and provide reassurance to the community.
The OPP is reminding all visitors, particularly women who may be walking alone, to take precautions when using trails and public outdoor spaces. Anyone who observes suspicious activity or feels threatened should call 911 immediately.
Anyone with information related to these incidents is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
