Two rental apartment buildings could go up on the site of a Mississauga church.

A development proposal for 4094 Tomken Rd. will be discussed at an upcoming public meeting.

The property is currently home to Westminster United Church and a seven-storey apartment building. Both those buildings would remain in the proposed redevelopment of the property, according to a submission to the City of Mississauga.

The proposal from the owner, United Property Resource Corporation, is to add two 12-storey residential buildings to the land at the southwest corner of Tomken Road and Rathburn Road.

The two, 12-storey rental apartment buildings would bring 241 residential units to the neighbourhood. The owner is planning for 30 per cent affordable units.

The apartment units will include a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.

The proposed redevelopment will provide “much needed affordable rental housing” in Mississauga, the Planning Justification Report notes.

The new apartment buildings will also include community, institutional, and residential spaces on the ground level, with 11 storeys of residential apartment units above.

A community garden, children’s play area, open lawn, and gathering space for the church are proposed for the interior green space. Trees will line the northeastern and eastern parts of the property for privacy.

Westminster United Church has a long history in Mississauga. The congregation dates back to Burnhamthorpe United Church in 1840 but the current building was completed in 1992, according to the church’s website. The seven-storey residential apartment building, known as Tomken Grove Non-Profit Homes, was incorporated in 1989.

The developer says the church and existing apartment building will be fully retained in the redevelopment of the property.

Official plan and zoning by-law amendments are needed to proceed with the project.

Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca is hosting a community meeting with the developer at Westminster United Church (sanctuary), 4094 Tomken Rd. on Monday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m.
