2 major airlines announce new international flights from Toronto

Two major airlines have announced that they will be launching new flights from Toronto.

Both WestJet and Air Transat just announced new routes which will begin service next year.

WestJet said it will be flying to three new destinations: Ponta Delgada, Portugal; Cardiff, United Kingdom; and Medellín, Colombia.

Flights to Ponta Delgada are scheduled to begin in June, Medellín in April, and Cardiff in May.

WestJet said it will also bring back service between Toronto and Glasgow, Scotland beginning in May. It previously operated that route in 2022.

Each of the four routes are seasonal and will have a peak frequency of four times per week.

“Routes have been thoughtfully chosen to create meaningful connections to underserved markets that are rich in culture, community and opportunity,” the airline said.

Meanwhile, Air Transat said that it will be launching new non-stop service from Toronto to Accra, Ghana.

It will operate from June 17 to Oct. 22, 2026, with two flights per week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“We are honoured to be the first and only airline to offer a direct connection between Canada and Ghana,” said Sebastian Ponce, Transat’s chief revenue officer.

“This non-stop service between Toronto and Accra aligns with our growth strategy on the African continent and directly responds to the needs of the Ghanaian diaspora in Ontario as well as the increasing interest in travelling to Ghana. It will also provide travellers with an entirely new, simplified connectivity option, eliminating the long European layovers that were previously required.”

It marks Air Transat’s fourth African destination, with the other three being Marrakech, Dakar, and Agadir.
