Police say the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where thousands of people had gathered for the annual festival celebrating Latin culture, food and music.
Toronto Police Service first reported an active shooting investigation at approximately 8:12 p.m., advising the public to avoid the area due to reports of a shooting and multiple injuries.
In updates posted later in the evening, police confirmed that five people had been located with gunshot wounds.
“Six people located with gunshot wounds. Tragically, two victims have been pronounced deceased,” Toronto Police Operations said in a social media post.
Police said the scene has since been secured, but a large police presence remains in the area as officers continue their investigation.
Authorities are urging residents and festival-goers to continue avoiding the area and to follow directions from emergency personnel.
No information about the victims, possible suspects, or any arrests has been released.
Police said more information will be provided as the investigation continues.
