2 Canadian neighbourhoods make list of best spots in the world

Two Canadian neighbourhoods have made a list of 40 top coolest spots in the world.

The top 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world is an annual list from art, entertainment and attractions magazine, Time Out.

The magazine asks city-dwellers across the globe for the coolest spots in their cities. The top neighbourhoods are known for their culture, food and are just places people gather for fun.

This is the sixth year for the list and Time Out says more than 12,000 people provided input. The magazine then narrowed down the list with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts.

The final list includes neighbourhoods with community and social ventures, access to open and green space and thriving street life.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the two Canadian picks are in the country’s largest cities — Toronto and Montreal.

Montreal’s downtown makes number 36 on the list. Time Out says the “downtown core is in the midst of a boom.”

Highlights include shops, major events such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the giant chess board, outdoor art installations and circus acts. In winter, the area comes alive with the gigantic illuminated skating rink, disco bumper cars and food pop-ups.

Just below Montreal is Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood coming in at number 38. The magazine notes changes to the area following the loss of discount store Honest Ed’s, currently being replaced by condos.

Time Out says the neighbourhood is emerging with a “fresh new look” with new retail spaces and more housing. They note the long-standing favourite Hot Docs Cinema, and the newly Michelin-starred Mimi Chinese.
