A $2.3 million project to replace the track surface on Durham Region’s only proper outdoor track is now complete and ready for the return of athletes.

The Civic Stadium track in Oshawa is the primary venue for regional track and field competitions for generations of student athletes, as well as organizations such as the Oshawa Hawkeyes football program

The project involved replacement of the existing track with a new rubberized surface designed to enhance performance, durability and safety, while meeting current World Athletics track standards. Upgrades were also completed on the javelin and pole vault runways, the high jump area and the long jump pits.

The Civic Stadium features a 400‑metre, eight‑lane track, jumping runways, a turf multi‑sport field and seating for up to 2,000 spectators. With a press box, scoreboard, change rooms and concession services, it is well‑suited for regional and provincial track and field events, as well as football, lacrosse and soccer.

The track has been closed since September 2024, with events like last summer’s World Super Sixes lacrosse tournament moved to adjoining fields at the sprawling Civic Recreation Complex grounds.

The track and Field 1 are major regional assets and closures affect local athletics and school board events, with the city helping displaced user groups during the shutdown with alternative venues and equipment when possible.

A petition started by users before the renovation project asked for action on the “hard and slippery surface, outdated relay exchange zones and deteriorating conditions” at the track.

A third-party inspection in 2024 reported that the surface of the track was near the end of its lifespan and did not meet competition standards. The city retained an engineering consultant to evaluate what needed to be done, with the determination that project required a full replacement of the track.
