A fire in a townhome development under-construction in West Hamilton has caused $1 million in damage.

The fire, which took place at 555 Sanitorium Rd. in the new home development site on the former Chedoke Hospital grounds, is not deemed to be suspicious, says the Hamilton Fire Department. The blaze started in a row of three-storey townhomes.

Firefighting crews were summoned to the area at around 9:46 a.m. on Thursday morning. The first crew to arrive immediately found heavy black smoke emanating from a row of townhomes.

Fire was found in the first floor at unit 47, and heavy smoke was reported in unit 49. But HFD firefighters were able to limit the damage to those two units and one other. The former two ” sustained significant damage” and unit 45 had “limited damage.”

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe related that HFD has not had any reports of injuries to the responding firefighters. The crews had to knock down walls and ceilings in order to quell the blaze.

“Aggressive interior firefighting operations were initiated on all three floors of both units, as firefighters needed to pull down ceilings and open up walls to find the advancing fire,” Cunliffe said in a release. “It took over an hour to find and extinguish all of the fire.

“Through the hard work and efforts of all staff on scene, the damage was limited to the three units,” he added.
