17-year-old from Mississauga charged after Kitchener stabbing investigation

A 17-year-old from Mississauga has been charged after police say a man was stabbed during an overnight incident in Kitchener.

Waterloo Regional Police responded to reports of a disturbance shortly after midnight on Tuesday, July 21, in the area of Homer Watson Boulevard and Conestoga College Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found a 19-year-old man who had been assaulted with an edged weapon. The victim was taken to an out-of-region hospital for treatment of injuries that police say were not life-threatening.

Investigators believe the incident was targeted.

Following an investigation, police arrested a 17-year-old Mississauga youth and charged the accused with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breach of recognizance.

The youth was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The accused cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), which prohibits the publication of information that could reveal the identity of a young person charged with a criminal offence. The law is intended to protect the privacy of youth involved in the justice system while allowing them opportunities for rehabilitation.

Police have not released any further details about the relationship, if any, between the accused and the victim.
