An investigation by police into a large gathering of people in Mississauga has resulted in a 17-year-old facing several gun-related charges.

Members of Peel police’s Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing (STEP) team were assisted by the 11 Division Bicycle Unit on Sept. 9 when they investigated a large group of people that had gathered in the area of The Collegeway and Hornbeam Crescent at around 8:30 p.m.

Officers discovered a 17-year-old from Mississauga at the scene in possession of a loaded Rugar handgun. It was fitted with an overcapacity magazine.

The youth was arrested and charged with numerous gun-related offences.

A general provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.) prohibits the release of the name of a young person and, therefore, the identity of the youth charged in this investigation is protected.

He was held pending a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 10.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators with the Specialized Enforcement Bureau STEP team at 905-453-2121 ext. 3515.
