163 km/h on northern Ontario highway leads to charges for Mississauga man

A Mississauga man faces stunt driving and impaired driving charges after police pulled over a car that was travelling significantly over the speed limit on a northern Ontario highway over the Labour Day weekend.
North Bay Ontario Provincial Police said officers stopped a grey sedan that was clocked at more than 60 km/h over the posted speed limit on a stretch of Highway 11 near North Bay at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Police subsequently determined the driver had consumed alcohol.
Stunt driving in Ontario is defined as travelling at:
- 50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h
- 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less
- a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway
A 50-year-old Mississauga man is charged with:
- operation while impaired — alcohol or drugs
- operation while impaired — blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- drive motor vehicle perform stunt — excessive speed
- having care or control of a motor vehicle with liquor readily available
He’s scheduled to appear in North Bay court on Sept. 17.
Police issued the driver a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
