More than a dozen luxury vehicles that were stolen from Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto and York were recovered last Friday in Vaughan by police just before being shipped out of the province — and perhaps the country.

Investigators with York Regional Police say that while the 15 high-end vehicles have been seized, the car thieves remain on the loose.

Police say they were led on Dec. 15 to the “cache of stolen high-end vehicles” by a vehicle-tracking company that had traced two of the stolen vehicles to a private property in the area of Keele Street and Maloy Street in Vaughan.

“When officers arrived on scene, they found a number of shipping containers on the property,” police said in a news release on Tuesday. “A search warrant was executed and investigators located 15 high-end vehicles, including the two that were initially tracked to that location. Fourteen of the vehicles were lodged in shipping containers being prepared for transport.”

Investigators say most of the recovered vehicles were stolen between Dec. 11 and 13 from York, Peel and Toronto. They add they’re in the process of notifying the owners.

The investigation continues and police urge anyone with information to call them at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7142, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The number of auto thefts, particularly those targeting luxury vehicles, continues to be on the dramatic rise in recent years in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto and across the GTA and southern Ontario.

In an ongoing effort to battle the crime, Peel Regional Police will host the 51st annual Vehicle Crimes Conference next May 6-9 at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

The four-day event is being staged by Peel cops in collaboration with the U.S.-based Northeast Regional Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.

The police conference will feature numerous guest speakers, workshops and other components all geared toward fighting the growing crime of auto theft in Peel, the GTA and southern Ontario, and across North America, organizers say.

Speaking at a press conference back in March after police had recovered dozens of Range Rovers and other luxury vehicles worth more than $10 million that were stolen from homes in Mississauga and Brampton and destined for the Middle East, Peel’s police chief noted car theft rings are a huge problem.

Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said at the time that car thefts are dramatically increasing, particularly in Mississauga and Brampton where the per capita rate is the highest in the country.

“To say auto theft is an epidemic across Canada and Ontario would be an understatement,” Duraiappah said in March.
