An Oakville gym that defiantly stayed open during the provincial lockdown has been temporarily shutdown after an outbreak of COVID-19 cases.

Halton Region Public Health confirmed that 15 cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant are associated with the gym, located at 177 Cross Avenue, Unit 1.

The outbreak was initially declared on June 28.

A Section 22 Close Order was handed out by public health authorities and the gym was ordered closed on July 3.

“It is with great sadness and regret that we would like to inform you all of the closure of Muscle HQ, effective immediately,” gym owner Ali Siddiqui said in a video message early Monday morning on the gym’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Siddiqui explained in the video that the gym made it their mission to provide a facility for people to train at during these times, while also ensuring they would go about it in a way that is safe for its members and for the community at large.

Reportedly back in May, Siddiqui claimed only those with medical conditions and medical notes could use the facilities at Muscle HQ.

“We have implemented every safety protocol required of us and after a full six months of operation incident free, we finally found the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus in our gym,” Siddiqui said. “Within 48 hours we have several cases at our gym.”

Halton Region Public Health are asking that all 425 people who used the fitness facility self-isolate for 14 days after their last visit to Muscle HQ.
