A proposal for an apartment building to replace an old, partly vacant plaza has generated mixed reactions.

The plaza at 1225 Dundas St. E., west of Dixie Road, currently has a proposal for a 12-storey residential apartment building with 462 units with ground floor retail and 34 townhouses, according to the City of Mississauga Planning Information Hub.

In 2017, the plaza had several shops such as a Bluenotes, Suzy Shier, and a Shoe Club store.

But in recent years, businesses left and the units remained vacant. Danforth Food Market, Baituna Furniture, Spoon and Fork, a Japanese and Thai restaurant, and an employment centre remain.

A post on Reddit about the development plans notes that the area ” has some very run down spots that need redevelopment desperately.”

Some feel the plaza should be left for retail while others note how much Mississauga needs affordable housing.

Others reminisced about how the area is changing and about the nearby Dixie Arena that became a dance hall in 1986 (Astralight), but was damaged by fire two years later.

For now, there are sparse details on the development. A sign posted at the site suggests there will be a public meeting about the development in the future.
