A Brampton man is planning a big surprise for his wife after winning a huge $100,000 lottery prize.

Hector Atkinson is a retiree from Brampton who says he’s played Daily Keno every week for the last 15 years, but never scored a big win.

But that changed after checking a ticket for the Jan. 20 Keno draw, scoring $100,000 playing the Encore.

“I was checking my tickets comparing it to the winning numbers and when I saw I matched the Encore numbers, I had to check to see what I won,” Atkinson said while picking up his prize at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. “When I saw it was $100,000, I was thrilled.”

Atkinson says family members had a hard time wrapping their heads around the windfall, saying “they didn’t believe me until I showed them the correspondence from the prize centre.”

Now $100,000 richer, Atkinson says he plans to save some of his winnings for the future but will also spread the wealth around to his loved ones and treat his wife to a special surprise.

Encore offers 22 ways to win and can be played along with most lottery games for an extra $1, with a new draw every day. The OLG says it supports safe play and responsible gambling through its PlaySmart program.

The winning ticket was purchased at Dairy Plus on Nanwood Drive in Brampton.
