100-year-old clothing chain launches redesign after emerging from bankruptcy protection in Canada

A 100-year-old Canadian clothing store chain has launched a reimagined store concept.

As part of its 100th anniversary, Reitmans unveiled a new logo and reimagined store concept at Carrefour Laval, located in the Greater Montreal area, approximately 20 km from downtown Montreal.

The redesign comes after financial struggles during the pandemic.

Reitmans filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2020 and emerged from restructuring 19 months later. It closed about 160 stores and shut down two brands (Addition Elle and Thyme Maternity). Reitmans Ltd. now operates 387 stores under three banners, consisting of 217 Reitmans, 85 Penningtons and 85 RW&CO.

Designed by award-winning interior design studio Burdifilek, the new concept features open layouts, rich textures and a clean palette, the retailer said.

“This initiative reflects a natural evolution for Reitmans. We wanted to create a clear and intuitive environment that better showcases our collections and reflects our current fashion sensibility,” said Isabelle Bonin, vice president, marketing, e-commerce and visual presentation at Reitmans. “It’s an experience designed to better support our customers and strengthen their connection to the brand.”

Reitmans has a long-standing legacy in Canada, said Diego Burdi, co-founder and creative director, Burdifilek.

“Our goal was to not reinvent it, but to reinterpret it. We highlighted the familiarity of the brand within a confident setting that will resonate across Canada,” said Burdi.

Launched at Carrefour Laval on April 18, this concept paves the way for a rollout across Canada beginning in 2027.

Reitmans was founded by Herman and Sarah Reitman in Montreal in 1926.
