Chances are, if you are traveling on any toll road you are using a transponder made in Mississauga.

To prove the point, Kapsch TrafficCom has announced that today (June 6), the 100th million transponder unit rolled off production lines and will be used by a driver somewhere around the globe.

The transponders enable automatic toll payments without requiring a stop at a toll plaza. Benefits include reducing emissions and travel times for users while making it efficient for highway operators from a business standpoint.

In Ontario, the devices are used as part of programs such as EZ-Pass and on Highway 407.

“Each transponder enables easier toll payments without the need to stop at a plaza, meaning that the 100 million units have saved drivers millions and millions of hours,” said Dan Toohey, SVP of Sales, Manufacturing and Business Development at Kapsch TrafficCom.

Founded in 1978, the company has been operated by family-owned Kapsch TrafficCom since 2010 which now produces various equipment necessary for modern traffic management.

With clients in 50 countries, the company supplies everything from components to design and implementation to the operation of systems.

“As a family business, community is a key element of the Kapsch TrafficCom culture,” said CEO Georg Kapsch. “This milestone is a symbol of the partnership with all our employees here in Mississauga and the city of Mississauga and its citizens, a partnership that will hopefully last for years to come.”
